Few days ago, I face some difficulties connecting to the internet in my parent's house. The dsl light was stable, but my wireless router just wouldn't connect or simply dial in to the internet. After tinkering with my router for about an hour I finally gave up. Sometimes in order to find the answer, you just have to think out of the box, said my colleague. He adviced me to make the ADSL modem to dial in instead of the router.

As we know the modem  may act as a bridge like we see in this picture, whilst the router will dial in to establish the connection and later transmit the signal to other pcs. On the other the hand, the modem can also assume the role of a router, whilst the router just act as a hub transmitting the signal to other pcs.

Here is how we do it in five simple steps.

Step 1

1)  Go to your modem router page (for example mine is zyxel: 192.168.1.1).

2)  Click on WAN and set your Mode to routing.

3)  Key in your username & password provided by your ISP.

4)  Set multiplexing to vc,  Check obtain IP address automatically & Check Dialed-up connection.

5) Save your new settings.

Step 2

1) Under Network, click on LAN and then click DHCP Setup.

2) You can choose your ip starting address from 192.168.1.2  and above. MIne I chose (192.168.1.50)

3) Pool size just leave it as it is.

4) Set your Primary and Secondary DNS Server provided by your ISP.

Step 3

 1) Next, under Network click on NAT (Network Address Translation) and check it

 2) Check SUA only. The rest of the setting just leave it as it is.

Step 4

 1) Before leaving your modem page, just click on LAN, then IP to ensure the default gateway & subnet mask are set  correctly. By default it is set to 192.168.1.1 you can just leave as it is.

Step 5

 1)  Now go to your wireless router page. MIne by default is 192.168.0.1 .You need to change the router ip address  to something which is closer to your modem ip adress, lets give it 192.168.1.2

 2)  Finally uncheck the Enable DHCP Server, since we already assigned it in the modem page earlier.

Now your router should be getting the internet from the modem, and trasmitting the signals to other pcs in your network.
